Mid Century Zen
Location: Glen Ellen, California
This midcentury transformation of an outdated ranch house unites our client's love for Sonoma County, wine making and Japanese heritage. The modifications include a new soaring roofline to create dramatic ceilings and enhance the view and the addition of a new ADU. A playful use of materials and architectural elements weave together the interior and exterior. Several Japanese influences include a genkan (traditional lowered entryway), engawa (floating deck), and a tokonoma (alcove for flower and scroll display) . Initially we explored the possibility of a wine cave, and through the design process decided to locate it with access to the exterior patio and enhance the tasting experience with a pass through bar with pocketing window with a view of the vineyard. We recessed the floor in this area to give it a cave tasting experience. A diseased Redwood tree sourced from their property was milled and used to clad the ceiling, create a live edge bench in the Entry, bar in the Wine tasting room, and a natural column feature in the Tokonoma.
